Honoring Suffolk County’s Class of 2014 Valedictorians

The Suffolk County School Superintendents Association hosted its 20th annual Valedictorians Luncheon to acknowledge and honor Suffolk County’s highest achieving students from the Class of 2014. School superintendents, administrators and parents joined together to celebrate the achievements of these outstanding young men and women. Attendees to the luncheon were welcomed with music provided by the West Babylon High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed under the direction of Matthew Scott.

Congratulating the students on their hard work and academic achievements were Dr. Roberta Gerold, SCSSA president and Middle Country School District superintendent of schools; Susan A. Schnebel, SCSSA vice president and Islip School District superintendent of schools; and Anthony Cacciola, SCSSA president-elect and West Babylon School District superintendent of schools.

Keynote speaker Theresa A. Regnante, president and CEO of United Way Long Island, encouraged the valedictorians to use their extraordinary talents to help others and to make the world a better place for all.

Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition. As they were being acknowledged, the colleges they plan to attend were announced along with their anticipated majors. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cooper Union, Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania, among others.

The SCSSA and its corporate partners also awarded 10 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. This was the only time when all of the Suffolk County Class of 2014 valedictorians were honored together, and it was truly a memorable occasion.
