SUFFOLK COUNTY CLASS OF 2009 VALEDICTORIANS HONORED

The Suffolk County School Superintendents Association (SCSSA) hosted the 15th Annual Valedictorians Luncheon to honor the county’s top student-scholars from the Class of 2009. School superintendents, administrators, guidance counselors, and family members joined in the festive occasion to recognize the successes of these outstanding and bright young minds.
SCSSA President and South Huntington School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Shea congratulated the graduating seniors on their commitment and dedication to success and acknowledged them as “leaders” in their school communities. He encouraged the students to pay attention to those who affect them. “The people who make a difference in your lives are the ones who care enough to take the time to touch your life in an important way,” Mr. Shea declared.
Keynote speaker and international best-selling author Jay Rifenbary reminded the valedictorians that core values will help them through life’s difficulties and that happiness is not derived from material objects. “You have to ask yourselves whether your internal values are strong enough to help you in times of self-doubt,” Mr. Rifenbary stated. “Your core values are what will help you through the tough times in your lives.”
SCSSA President-Elect and Superintendent of East Islip Union Free School District Mr. Wendell Chu explained that valedictorians are “years in the making.” He compared these bright, young scholars as seeds that have been cultivated by a farmer. “It is time for you to go through the world and plant seeds of hope, caring, peace, and creativity,” Mr. Chu stated.
The valedictorians, who were introduced by Mr. Chu and accompanied by their respective Superintendent of Schools, received a Valedictorian Award Certificate and Mr. Rifenbary’s motivational book, No Excuse! Incorporating Core Values, Accountability, and Balance Into Your Life and Career.

14th Annual Valedictorians Luncheon

The Suffolk County School Superintendents Association (SCSSA) hosted the 14th Annual Valedictorians Luncheon to honor the best and the brightest of the Class of 2008. School Superintendents, administrators and family members joined to recognize the successes of these outstanding Suffolk County students.

President of the SCSSA and Sayville Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Rosemary F. Jones welcomed guests and provided words of optimism for the graduating seniors. “The past collective accomplishments of these students serve as a tool to foreshadow triumphs to come, while students embark on a new and unknown journey,” stated Dr. Jones. She encouraged the students, while on that journey, to look for little clues of insight into their future.

Dr. Jones identified their special title of Valedictorian as an opportunity to affect the lives of others and enrich the world in which we live. She described the honorees as the lead story of our time and role models for many in their school district, community and the world.

Pulitzer Prize Winning Author Edwin T. Burrows provided the valedictorians with a glimpse of New York’s education past to frame the future. Dr. Burrows described the development of New York’s public education system and praised those teachers, administrators and parents who have contributed, and continue to contribute, to the evolution of its success. “While these elite students have spent the majority of their educational lives learning from others, the virtues these students possess have allowed them to rise to the top of their class and go forth to emerge as leaders of the world,” stated Dr. Burrows.

Valedictorians, announced by SCSSA Vice President and Superintendent of the Fire Island Union Free School District Wendell Chu, were accompanied by their respective Superintendent of Schools and received a Valedictorian Award Certificate, Dr. Burrow’s book Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 with inspirational book plate, and a fortune cookie to give each student a glimpse into their boundless future.
